Carson Library and Swysgood Technology Center can provide you with print and electronic resources, audiovisual equipment, multimedia tools, and support for K-16 educators from instructional technologists and librarians. Carson Library is also Montana's NASA Educational Resource Center.

FIND BOOKS, VIDEOS, AND OTHER LIBRARY MATERIALS

The UM system libraries offer a wealth of education related resources, including current books, journals, newspapers, videos, software, curriculum materials, research reports, art prints, music, audiobooks, and more. To locate library resources:

·  Go to the library web site and click on Library Catalog

·  No username or password necessary.

·  Search for books, videos, or other materials in the UM system libraries.

FIND ARTICLES IN JOURNALS, NEWSPAPERS, OR DOCUMENTS

Go to the library web site and click on "Find an article from a database."

You may enter and scroll down the A-Z list of all library databases, or select the subject "Education."

When you click on any one of the databases, you will be asked to enter a username and password.  These are the same username and password that you use for entering the campus network (first initial_last name, social or other campus i.d. number).

IF YOU ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH YOUR CAMPUS NETWORK ACCESS, notify your instructor and call the Registrar's Office, (406)683-7371.

Selected library databases related to Education:

·  ERIC on FirstSearch gives full-text of selected ERIC documents and citations to education journal articles.

·  Wilson Web provides full-text journal articles in Education. Select "Education" as Subject Area to search.

·  JSTOR provides historical information from older journals on education and related topics.

·  New York Times Online is the nation's leading newspaper. Retrieve full-text articles from current and historical papers.

·  PapersFirst provides worldwide conference papers on FirstSearch. Once you get to a citation, use Article Linker to link to full-text.

·  PsycARTICLES provides full-text online journal from the American Psychological Association.

·  The NCTE Journals include all of the online publications from the National Council of Teachers of English.

Two full-text periodical databases that include college-level journals in education and related topics are:

·  EBSCO Academic Premier

·  Expanded Academic ASAP.
    After entering the database, select Expanded Academic ASAP from the Gale Group database menu.
    On the menu see also other Gale Group databases for K-12 education, including the Infotrac Kids, Junior, and Student editions.

FIND A JOURNAL ARTICLE FOR WHICH YOU ALREADY HAVE A CITATION

·  Go to the library web site and click on  Article Linker  to search for journal titles in multiple periodical databases at once. After locating your journal, click on "Search for Article" to enter the article title, author, volume number, etc. Click on the "Article" link.

GOVERNMENT INFORMATION

·  ERIC  is the Education Resources Information Center (ERIC), sponsored by the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) of the U.S. Department of Education. In addition to providing citations to articles in Education journals, ERIC provides thousands of free full-text "documents" in Education, including curriculum guides, research studies, state reports, and more.

·  GPO is a searchable database of publications from the U.S. Government Printing Office. In FirstSearch, select GPO and search your topic. Watch for full-text links to government web sites.

·  Visit the official web portal for the State of MontanaDiscovering Montana to search for any Montana government information.


·  See the Montana State Commerce Department's  Census and Economic Information Center for Census data relevant to Montana.  This site is considered one of the best of its kind in the nation.

·  The web portal for all federal government information is FirstGov.gov  where you can link to the Department of Education, No Child Left Behind, Bureau of Indian Affairs, or other education-related agencies.

·  HP Learning Center offers free online courses at a variety of levels and applied to business settings on software applicatons, programming, Web site construction, and networking.

·  Microsoft Education Center provides free online information and tutorials for K-16 educators, administrators, students, and parents.

·  Adobe Online Training provides selected free sample online tutorials with additional instruction beginning at $49/course.

·  Electric Teacher offers free short tutorials for teachers on FrontPage, Word, PowerPoint, PhotoDraw, and additional links.

·  MacAcademy/WindowsAcademy produces and sells high-quality training CD-ROM's on a wealth of software.

·  ShortCourses bills itself as THE digital photography resource center, with online books on a broad range of digital photography topics.

FIND COURSE RESERVES MATERIALS

Select one of three options for searching and using Course Reserves:

·  Go to the library web site and click on Library Catalog .

·  Click on  Course Reserves  to search for books, videos, or other materials that your instructor has put on reserve for your class.

·  Retrieve reserved materials at the  Circulation Desk .

·  Go to the library web site and click on  E-Res  , then "Electronic Reserves and Course Materials" . Next,  select your instructor's name .

·  The default  password for E-Res  is your instructor's last name in lower case letters. Ask your instructor if there are reserves on E-Res.

·  E-Res articles open in Adobe Acrobat Reader, which is available on all campus computers.

·  Go to the library Circulation Desk and ask  for the reserves under the instructor name and course.

·  Go to the library web site and sign up for the  ILLiad  online request and loan service.

·  If off-campus, go to your local college, school, or public library and ask for interlibrary loan assistance.
