#19543 National Smokejumper Center Service Project at West Yellowstone
May (West Yellowstone, MT)
In the 1920s, the National Forest Service built the Madison Ranger Station buildings that housed many of the men and women who oversaw the administration of forest lands. Now the buildings are being moved across town in West Yellowstone, where they will continue to serve as the hub of the National Smokejumper Center, educating peiople about the proud history of smokejumpers and fostering wildlands stewardship. Help honor the legacy of these brave firefighters by upgrading and preserving the Madison Ranger Station buildings and landcaping the new grounds of the National Smokejumper Center.
#4778 Service for Camp Birch Creek: Windows & Doors to the Past
August (Dillon, MT)
Utilized from 1935 to 1941, “Camp Birch Creek, Company 1501” is the last standing Civilian Conservation Corps camp in Montana. Seven of its original fifteen structures remain today and are on the National Register of Historic Places. Buildings receive ongoing repairs and maintenance; however, time and funding restraints prevent the tender, loving attention each structure so richly deserves. Volunteers may choose among painting, staining, oiling and refinishing tasks; trail maintenance; fencing; replacement of outdoor benches and an educational signage project. Guidance provided by staff and resource personnel. Presentations include natural history of the area including history of Company 1501.

September (Virginia & Nevada Cities, MT)
Work with Montana Heritage Commission staff to help maintain Virginia City, a registered historic district and nearby Nevada City, an open air museum. The area is one of the Treasure State’s most significant cultural resources and site of its second major gold strike and territorial capital. Work projects include restoration and repairs at the Iron Rod Post Office; cleaning and cataloging objects within Museum exhibit buildings; preservation and stabilization repair work in Nevada City including doors, windows, porches, outhouses, outbuildings; establishing new ground beds and installing picket fences at the Heirloom Gardens in Nevada City Museum; and organizing and setting up a wheelwright shop.
The Sacajawea Interpretive, Cultural and Educational Center commemorates Sacajawea and her people, the Agaidika Shoshone. The Center's education programs and displays interpret the significance of Sacajawea's role with the Corps of Discovery and aspects of their journey through Lemhi County. The BLM, Idaho Fish and Game, USFS and City of Salmon provide materials, guidance and supervision for all work projects. All skill levels welcome.
Lodgings and work site at 4,300'. Work site is 71-acre park located on the Lemhi River just east of Salmon, Idaho. History presentations and interpretation provided by Center staff and public lands specialists.

#19037 Historic Restoration at Bannack State Park
NOT OFFERED IN 2012 (Dillon, MT)
Spend a week immersed in gold rush history, ghost town ambience of well-preserved wooden structures, barely discernable foundations, cemeteries and ghosts of everyday lives. Gold was discovered at Grasshopper Creek in 1862 and prospectors, drifters and dreamers rushed in to make their fortunes. They built rough tent shelters and cabins; saloons, general stores, assay offices and banks were not far behind and Bannack was named Montana's first territorial capital in 1864. Work projects include removing/replacing roofing material, daubing, and repairing old and damaged window sashes on historic structures; headstone repair and stabilization in historic cemeteries; and organizing, cleaning and sorting significant mining and newspaper collections.
